The Best Free VPN and Proxy Services

(Note: For a comprehensive and up-to-date comparison of features and prices for different VPNs, click on this VPN and Proxy Comparison list.)

While almost all VPN and proxy services have a fee, there are some ways to use a VPN or proxy for free. Warning to the wise: these are still companies who need to make money somehow. Some depend on donations while some (or all) may make money selling your browsing information. I am not saying this is the case, but I am saying you should certainly exercise caution.

Freegate
http://www.dit-inc.us/freegate

Freegate only can be used in China. Consequently, it is also probably the best free way to access (mostly) unrestricted internet in China. I have used Freegate on and off for the three years I have been in China, I did a more in depth review here. Freegate is nice because it can be used on Windows very easily and does OK in Linux using Wine. There are no annoying ads in Freegate. I know that a lot of my Chinese friends also prefer to use Freegate (it is called è‡ªç”±é—¨ Zìyóu mén in Chinese).

Although Freegate certainly gives you a lot of Freedom (access to blocked websites) it is not always very fast and sometimes it can be unreliable. This is because China often changes ports that they choose to block. Even if you have Freegate, you should not expect it to work all the time.

VPNBook
http://www.vpnbook.com/

VPNbook offers PPTP AND OpenVPN servers and passwords right on their website. No need to sign up or log in. To be quite honest, I was very surprised when I added the credentials shown, and IT WORKED! Quite amazing to have a working VPN that is absolutely free. Not only do they offer free VPN, but they offer a free proxy as well.

There are a handful of different servers to choose from and the promise of even more to come. I am not sure how they offer such a great service for free, but it would seem that at least for now, that is what is going on. There is an option to donate if you wish to do so.

HotspotShield

HotspotShield is another free option (though they also have a faster option you can pay for). It works quite reliably but is also quite slow. Something else with HotspotShield is that it is ad supported. This makes sense to me as free makes the company no money, but the ads are more annoying than your usual ads. You can use an ad blocker and have some luck with not viewing the ads. I used HotspotShield for a month or two before ditching it.

The biggest reason I stopped using HotspotShield is because there is no way to use it in Linux.

Other Free PPTP VPN - (usually does not work)
Google search for free VPN

There are various companies that claim to offer free VPN. One of the more notable websites I saw is freevpn.me. I was never able to successfully connect to freevpn.me though. Perhaps this only does not work in China.

If you do a quick Google search, you will come up with lot of other choices. Many of these look promising, but the truth of the matter is that I have had almost no luck with them here in China. Maybe it is because I am in China, or maybe it is because I am using Linux, but I have tried no fewer than 20 free VPN services and I was not able to get any of them to work in China.

With all the new services and changes that come out though, it never hurts to try.

  2. Proxy websites - to use what areas and where to buy
Where to buy domains for Proxy
That's the easy part - usually the cheapest especially.info sites is monitored by GoDaddy.com namecheap.com . Beware of promotions and always in the mass that makes a big difference now. For example , if you buy 6 or more.info Sites GoDaddy, you will pay less than a dollar on the page.

    Which area buy proxy site
Now the hard bit is - . . Should I buy information , com, etc. As always, it depends ! There are some basic differences :

a). Information proxy sites are automatically blocked in several countries or in some companies or schools .
b ) the cost difference is important - . . Info often less than a dollar , how can cost ten times more .

So what you need to decide what you want to the page. Is it to build a website with SEO you want to get long term then.com build , is the answer. Distribute the additional costs over a greater earning periods .

Passage through the effect that more traffic a.com looks real , but at least on the basis of some experiments I've done. If you have a website that is a place for quick use - . Most of them , info is the answer. What I mean by that is the income of most pages are at the very beginning of his life. After the first days of life quickly blocked sites by country , schools and organizations , so it is very important for the lowest possible death.

  4. It's not clear if sites like VPNbook still work in China. Time for some local person to ask of it still working?

  6. Avoid NordVPN if at all possible. Service is cheap, but you get what you pay for in this case. Speeds are ridiculously slow. Customer service doesn’t exist. No option to cancel service on your account options page. Terms of service says “You have a right to cancel your account at any time by contacting us.” Too bad they don’t even give you a phone number to cancel service, you have to use a form on their Contact Us page (the email support referenced in this review) and I am still waiting on a response. I guess if I don’t hear back in a reasonable amount of time I will have to cancel my credit card to avoid being charged again? This is a dirty way of treating your customers. Avoid NordVPN at all costs.
