I recently received a pair of Sapphire Foodware Silicone Oven Mitts in order for me to do a review and I thought I would do a blog post on why I think silicone oven mitts are the bomb diggity.
Full disclosure. I have many pairs of silicone oven mitts and gloves because I love them so much!
The most obvious reason I prefer silicone oven mitts is because they can withstand a lot more heat than just your typical oven mitts. As you can see from the picture above, these Sapphire mitts are still quite flexible. Not only that but they cover my hand completely and even a good portion of my arm.
The design of these gloves makes it so that any hot surface is still about a millimeter away from the main part of the glove because of the patterned design.
You can see that the mitts are padded so they are just as comfortable as cotton mitts. Another huge advantage is that these silicone mitts do much better if you spill a hot liquid on them. Rather than getting absorbed and burning your hand, the liquid will drip off the mitts.
I decided to do a test to see how much heat the mitts could withstand and I actually put them on the hot coils of the stove (note: this is stupid. There is no need to repeat my stupidity). I was happy to see that not only did my hand not get burned, but the mitt survived as well! It did however leave a white residue. I didn't have the glove on for more than a second or two, but I think it is good to know that these mitts can withstand some serious heat!
Here is a video I made that demonstrates how well silicone oven mitts work:
