The Halo Rover

Here is a little story: I work for a tech company. At this tech company all the sales guys ride around on hoverboards. They will have their laptops in one hand and be talking on the phone while going around on their hoverboards. I have always been too shy to ask to try one out but have always wondered if riding a hoverboard is as easy as it looks. Well, I found out this past week!

On a nice fall weekend I unboxed the Halo Rover. The first thing that I noticed was that it really was heavy and durable. The quality is quite impressive compared to the other hoverboards I have seen. I didn't spend too much time looking at it though because I wanted to go for a ride!

My First Ride

I had my wife record the very fist time I got on the Halo Rover. You can see from the video posted at the end of this post that although I was a bit wobbly when stepping on, it only took me a few seconds to get comfortable being on the Rover. After about a minute, I felt comfortable enough to go fairly fast. I was a bit surprised with how natural being on it felt. I took the Rover to a nearby bike trail and had so much fun that my family and I ended up spending all of the day on the trail. By the end of the day the Halo Rover felt almost like an extension of my body.

After I rode the Rover for a few minutes I asked other people in my family to try it out because I was curious if I was just a natural or if it really was just that easy to do. (Note: You can see this all in the video below as well.)

I had both my parents try this out (I hope they aren't reading this, and I don't want to divulge their age, but they are well into their grandparent years). My dad picked it up pretty easily as well. My mom struggled a bit more but was eventually able to ride it as well. I had my wife try it also and we discovered that practicing on the grass is a lot easier than on concrete. I also think the best way to do it is to just get on and go. The more hesitant you are to get on, the more likely it will be that you won't be able to stay on.

My brother was able to hop on and ride very easily. Both my brother and I are fairly sporty. Not saying you have to be to ride this, but I think for us it helped.

"Look ma, no hands!"

Obviously, this is not quite like riding a bike. While balance is important with both, the Halo Rover does not offer the security that handlebars do. On the other hand, your feet are already so close to the ground, there really is no room to fall. There were plenty of times where I lost balance but every time I did, I simply continued jogging. I think a good rule of thumb for this hoverboard would be to only go as fast as you can comfortably run. The specs say that this can go up to about 10 miles an hour but I feel like it can probably go a bit faster than that (not recommended by me).

I would offer more advice on how to ride this but I really feel like it becomes such an extension to the body that it would be like trying to tell someone how to walk. You just do it. Overtime you get better at it and you never fall (well.... almost never).

As far as safety is concerned, I doubt you will find a hoverboard safer than this. For one, there are blinkers on the back and headlights on the front. The blinkers automatically turn on when you turn. How cool is that? Also, I noticed that when I started going pretty fast the Rover would beep. Probably as a warning that I should not go any faster. The Halo Rover also is made of such high quality material that I feel very safe and secure when I am on it. I don't have to worry about it breaking or malfunctioning.

Makes the mundane fun

I mentioned before that my wife practiced on the grass because she had a bit of difficulty learning how to get on. Now that she knows how to ride it comfortably, she takes it EVERYWHERE! She rides it in the house. She even rides it to take out the trash! Having the Halo Rover around just makes things more fun. One feature I really like about it is that it can connect to your phone via Bluetooth and play music. It also comes with an app that gives you stats such as speed and distance traveled.

Something unique about this hoverboard compared to others is that it is all terrain. I have taken this on trails and up and down hills. It does great on dirt paths that are smooth and level. It can go over small rocks and twigs easily but will stop if you hit a big rock. Going down small hills is pretty easy but going back up takes some practice. There are metal wheel guards that protect the hoverboard and also prevent it from rolling away.

Not just for play

As I mentioned before, there are a lot of guys at work who have a hoverboard to get from one place to another. That may not be the intended use of a hoverboard, but it certainly does make work more fun. Something else that I quickly learned with the Halo Rover is that I really enjoyed using it when shooting video. I could easily shoot video without having to take any steps that would make video shaky. I am sure that the more I ride this, the more uses I will find for it.

If you are looking to get an awesome gift, or just want the best hoverboard available, you can't go wrong with the Halo Rover. I am going to go for another ride just as soon as I can get my wife to give it up for a few minutes!

    1. I found the easiest way to balance is to practice on grass. Other than that, you just have to do it. The more you hesitate to step on, the more you will wobble and the harder it will be.

  4. Great review! We have one and it is wonderful! Expensive but so far worth the money. One question, do you know how to turn down the voice that says "bluetooth pair?" It is really loud and we can't figure out how to lower it.

  5. Thanks Melissa! Unfortunately, I have not been able to figure out a way to turn down the volume either. It looks like that is something that you cannot do until after you connect. Makes it kind of hard to be discreet.

I am glad you have enjoyed everything else. I love mine!
