How to sign up for a Google/Gmail account without a phone number (or if Google rejects your VoIP number).

I sometimes find myself in need of an additional Google account. To stay organized at work, I like to have multiple different profiles on my browser (a great feature of Google Chrome). While you can create as many profiles as you want without signing in, I like to sign in to each account to sync data. This is not a problem if you already have multiple accounts, but what if you need an additional Google account? Google now requires you to use a phone number to sign up for a new account.

This is fine and dandy if you are a normal person with a normal phone number, but what if you are not a normal person (like me) and only have a VoIP number (like Google Voice or FreedomPop)? What if you don't want to give Google your phone number? What if you have already given out your phone number so many times to sign up for accounts that Google no longer accepts your phone number?

For a long time, I thought I had to borrow a friend's phone to do this and that there was no work around. The good news is that there is a workaround, and it is super easy! All you need to do is use an Android phone to sign up for a new account.

That is right; if you have an Android phone, you can use that to sign up for as many new accounts as you want and you do not need a phone number.

Below are screenshots of the steps you need to take to sign up for a new Google account using your Android phone.

Pull down the top drawer all the way and click on the settings icon (or go to the settings on your phone; it is different on many models of phones depending on the carrier you have). Once you are in settings, navigate until you see "Accounts." In accounts click on "Add account."

Click on the "Google" account. When it asks you to add your account click on "Or create a new account" and press "NEXT."

Enter your name, username (desired email address) and password.

When it asks to add your phone number, you can press the text that says "Skip."

You can choose to Keep up to date or not, and you can choose "No thanks" for giving out your billing information. Once you are done with that, your account is now setup!

If you have no intention of using that account on your phone (or if you are using someone else's phone) you can immediately remove the account you just created. Click on "Google" in accounts and click on the account you just created.

Click on the triple dot menu on the top right and select "Remove account." Verify that you want to remove the account and you are done.

Even though the account is no longer on the phone, you can still login to a Chrome account, Gmail, Google Drive, Google+, etc.
