VPN for Android (free)
If you are an expat living in China, you probably are not able to function normally for too long before you start using a VPN. Here is a list of some of the better free VPN Android apps.

GAE Proxy
https://code.google.com/p/gaeproxy/
http://www.coolapk.com/apk/4143/

This was the first thing I was able to use on my phone that actually worked. I think it was designed specifically for people in China. I never got it to work consistently though and have not been able to get it to work for quite some time.

DroidVPN
http://droidvpn.com/

DroidVPN gives you 100mb free a day (which is more than enough for me). When I first found out about it, it seemed to work very consistently and was wonderful! It has not worked for me for about the past 5-6 months though. I keep it installed on my phone just in case...
Update: It has been working quite wee recently!

Hideninja

Hideninja seems to be a new player. It worked the first time I tried it. Yay! It gives you unlimited VPN for free (for now). While it seems to be updating and improving at a fairly quick rate, it seems to be suffering the same fate as other Android VPNs. Hideninja seems to only work once in about every five times I try it.

Hideman VPN
http://www.hideman.net/

They give you 5 hours a week free. More than enough for me on my phone. The app never did anything for me. Never went beyond the "Loading..." screen. Hopefully something more becomes of this app. For now though...

Ladder Trial

Ladder trial has been the most reliable and consistent Android app I have used for VPN. While technically, Ladder Trial is a paid service, they also offer unlimited 7 minute free connections. So if you just need VPN on your phone for a few minutes to complete a single, simple task, then this is probably the best way to go. It always connects and works quite well. If you don't mind connecting every 7 minutes (or just paying for the service) then it is perfect!

  2. Now without further ado, here is a list of best free and limited trial android VPN apps. Some of them are moderately restricted by bandwidth, others might ask for subscription at the end of free trial period. What else do you need to have from a free android app? Have a look.

  4. Thank you for the app recommendations. I am old school and have not embraced fully technology. I kind of enjoy the freedom of being disconnected. ASM may change that. I look forward to using some of these apps.
